Theme: Moving through Change
The 2024 National School Sport Conference, scheduled for September 16-17 at the Tākina Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre, is set to be a transformative event for professionals in the secondary school sport sector across Aotearoa New Zealand. This year's theme, "Moving through Change," reflects the dynamic shifts occurring within our society and the sports sector. As we navigate these changes, we aim to equip attendees with the knowledge and tools needed to adapt and thrive.
Key Details:
Conference Theme: Moving through Change
In an era marked by rapid evolution, our conference theme "Moving through Change" underscores the importance of adapting to the societal and sectoral shifts impacting school sports. This theme will be explored through five key areas: Technology, Education, Sport, Environment, and Rangatahi (youth).
Technology:
As digital innovations reshape the landscape of sports, understanding the integration of technology in competition offerings and management, training, and performance is crucial. This topic will delve into the latest technological advancements and their implications for school sports.
Education:
The election of a new government has accelerated the already rapidly changing education landscape in Aotearoa. On top of changes to curriculum, assessment & qualifications, many schools are grappling with low levels of student attendance, staff shortages, property maintenance challenges & issues associated with our competitive 'self-managing' school system. What impact is this context having on the provision of sport? How are schools adapting their sports programmes in response to the changing nature of education?
Sport:
Sport is constantly evolving, influenced by new research, trends, and societal expectations. In Aotearoa, there's a growing focus on inclusivity, mental health, and well-being. The refreshed Sport NZ Balance is Better principles emphasise quality experiences and long-term development for all young people. The new Sport Pathways Framework provides flexible pathways for athletes to participate and progress at their own pace. These changes enhance participation and performance, ensuring sports remain a positive part of school life, supporting students' physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Environmental:
Environmental awareness is increasingly vital in all sectors, including sports. Discussions will focus on sustainable practices, the impact of climate change on sports activities, and how schools can lead the way in promoting environmental stewardship.
Rangatahi (Youth):
Our rangatahi are at the forefront of change, bringing fresh perspectives and driving new trends in sports. In Aotearoa, young people are reshaping the sports landscape with their unique preferences and values. Generational changes require us to understand their evolving interests, as rangatahi increasingly prioritise inclusivity, innovation, and social responsibility. Schools must engage with youth in new ways, fostering environments that resonate with their drive for positive impact. By empowering rangatahi to take on leadership roles, we can ensure school sports remain relevant, inclusive, and inspiring.
